KM Munshi


Born in Baruch in 1887, KM Munshi studied at Baroda (today Vadodara). He was vastly influenced by his teacher Sri Aurobindo Ghosh. His political inclinations first took the revolutionary path, then Home Rule and later on Gandhian Satyagraha. He led by example in the social changes that he believed in. The best example is that he married a widow when was promoting widow remarriage.Post independence, he served the nation in official capacity as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 1952 to 1957. The writer and journalist in him made contributions to Gujrati, Hindi and English languages. The Bhavan’s journal started by him has educated millions about the greatness of India. He was instrumental in reconstructing the heritage Somnath temple. The two main institutions he started are now well known, the first being Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan and the second the Institute of Agriculture at Anand, Gujarat (a forerunner to Anand Agricultural University). He was a real visionary and his visions still live on in the institutions he started.
